Introduction
Each award trained on The Camp is taught concurrently with the others, as each has similar outcomes to those being taught alongside it. By training the awards simultaneously trainers avoid repetition in content covered and allow for expansion of depth of understanding and knowledge. Concurrent training allows trainers to teach candidates to treat the patient as a whole rather than a patient requiring a spinal award holder to treat the neck and SFAC holder to treat a cut.
Senior First Aid Certificate (SFA)
The SFAC is the continual training thread that runs throughout the camp. It is taught each day and is present in every scenario. Candidates participate in theory and practical lessons throughout the week. However, higher learning outcomes for this award are achieved by candidates’ consistent exposure to ELT scenarios where SFAC skills are constantly applied, reviewed, adapted and reapplied with immediate feedback from trainers and leaders.
Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
Candidates generally arrive at The Camp with a basic understanding of oxygen and airway management devices as well as semi-automated[RO1] external defibrillators as a result previous Bronze Medallion award. During the week candidates knowledge and application of these skills are expanded along with their understanding and management of respiratory, cardiac, conscious and unconscious breathing and non-breathing emergencies.
Spinal Management
Candidates are trained to recogise and treat spinal injuries from the first day of camp commencing with dry land activities which progress to the pool (controlled flat water environment) and finally the surf. Candidates are encouraged with work as a team through communication and problem solving during scenarios to treat casualties in a range of familiar and challenging environments.
Inflatable Rescue Boat Crewperson (IRBC)
IRBC training commences in flat-water conditions that provides candidates with opportunity to gain an understanding of the capabilities of the boat; crewing basics, various crewing techniques, and patient pick-ups in calm water before being exposed to the surf. This award is an essential component of the Camp, as it provides a break from the classroom and gives the participants exposure to an aquatic environment but also provides increased additional locations for scenarios to occur.
Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat Driver (IRBD)
This award is only offered to those candidates who already hold their IRBC award and it is not guaranteed that candidates will receive the award by the end of the week. All boat drivers must hold their boat license and it is important they have some training prior to the camp. As part of their training, candidate drivers may perform maintenance on the IRB motors and time permitting may also perform repairs on both the motor and boat.
Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue (SMAR)
Teaching the SMAR during the Camp requires the schedule to be extended by an extra day and half. Candidates are exposed to a range of aquatic environments within the district during training for this award. Search and rescue operation skills learnt though SMAR training combined with patient management techniques obtained from other awards taught during The Camp give candidates the skills and knowledge for dealing with emergencies in the aquatic environment from beginning to end.
Certificate III - Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue)
Candidates become eligible to receive their Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue) once they have completed their SMAR plus 3 of the following awards:
· Senior First Aid Certificate
· Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
· Spinal Management
· Inflatable Rescue Boat Crewperson

Training Officers Certificate (TOC) and Assessor Awards
The Camp also provides Leaders and Management Team members the opportunity to gain awards throughout the week. Those who have completed their Training Officers Course (Provide Work Skill Instruction TAEDEL301A) are eligible to conduct training for their chosen award during the Camp. The facilitators assist the trainers with their teachings and provide detailed feedback after each session taught. The trainers are also provided with multiple opportunities to witness training by the facilitators themselves during the week. Members completing assessor awards also have the opportunity to participate in a range of assessment strategies under the supervision of experienced members.
