2014 SLST Dev Camp
October 2014 saw the introduction and successful running of Surf Life Saving Tasmania’s (SLST) first Lifesaving Development Camp. The program was based on the Bass District Lifesaving Development Camp structure and personnel. Held at Devonport Surf Life Saving Club the five-day camp trained candidates in three Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) awards and their related national competencies.
The Camp was held over five days from 9am Tuesday 30th September to 2pm Saturday 4th October 2014 with Leaders from Victoria and Tasmania in attendance. Candidates received three awards each, Senior First Aid, Spinal Management and Advanced Resuscitation Certificates.
Throughout the camp Candidates were provided with multiple opportunities to take part in “no-notice” scenarios. Scenarios provide a physical learning environment for transition of knowledge to real world capability. Experiencing scenarios that closely resemble real-life events in a controlled, supervised and supportive environment naturally provide candidates with opportunities to test, assess and most importantly reflect on their own learning.
The SLST Candidates said the following about the scenarios at the end of camp, 'Scenarios were great as they gave us the opportunity to test the skills we just learnt in the classroom, and apply them to a real life situation' and 'The scenario training is so effective as it allows you to put all your learnt skills into application and practice. I really enjoyed how the scenarios gradually got harder, with by the end of the week we were all practicing triage.'
The Lifesaving Development Camp would like to thank and congratulate all Candidates and Leaders on a successful week. Special thanks goto especially Leanne and Jacqui from SLST and Nyree and Brenden from the Bass District.
